What Do I Need to Know About Educational SMART Goals?
November 2, 2009 by Arina
Annabel and Erika are Accountancy freshmen who graduated on top of their class in high school. Yes, both girls are achievers, and they have the scholastic records to prove it. But then again, anyone who has read the girls’ homework on college goals can deliberately foretell that Erika will fair better in college. For while Annabel goes for “I’m gonna do well in class”, Erika seeks to “manage my time well to be able to get a 3.4 grade-point average in all my subjects”.
Indeed, educational smart goals distinguish the achiever Erika from the equally high flier Annabel. FYI, SMART goal means specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound goals. Here are a few examples of educational smart goals:
• Educational smart goals are specific-stir away from muddled, consuming and unachievable goals. Goals must be scrupulous, to the point and clear. The educational smart goal variation of “I’m going to study later” is “I will devote 2 hours every night to do my schoolwork.” Instead of “I’m going to finish my term paper”, aim for the educational smart goal of “I will start doing my term paper, a month before the deadline.”
• These types of goals are measurable. Time frames, dates, amounts-anything that can be your benchmark for success is central as they can help make out whether you have attained your goal or not. Rather than hoping for “better grades”, work for a quality point index of 3.5 by the end of the semester.
• Educational smart goals are attainable. Take action not a reaction-be realistic in your goals. Graduating on top of the class is dubious if your frequently on probation or if your average is just 2.2. Why not effort for a 3.0 instead-with good study habits and time management-that is more probable.
• They are relevant. Any goal should be grounded on a clear rationale. If the goal is to get an A on a biology mid-term exam four days away, don’t get preoccupied by starting on your home reading report that is not due for another week.
• They are time bound. Goals have got to have a starting point, a time frame and an ending point. Working on a detailed thesis paper is praiseworthy, but exhausting yourself for every little thing when you only have a week to finish it? That is suicide.
Those are some of the things you need to know about educational smart goals. Having smart goals is your pass to a good life-student life or life in general. Mastery of the goal setting process is the key to make the most out of life, especially if you are still a student. But what is even more imperative is that students don’t just have goals-they need to have smart goals. Unquestionably, goal setting is an important must-have for students-but it is a most disconcerting thing to master. But taking time and effort to make your educational goals specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound-can make all the difference to the direction of your life.
Don’t just aim. Hit the mark. Set smart goals.

College Doesn’t Always Equal Success

One of the biggest examples of this erroneous thinking is the fact that millions of people believe they cannot achieve great things because of lack of education. For one reason or another, after high school not everyone moves on into a continued educational program – whether it be a vocational school, college or university. Again, perhaps they did not see a way for it to be possible, so rather than trying to forge ahead and become successful, people settle. They don’t know any better, because they are brainwashed by society to believe that you must be college educated in order to achieve success. Guess what? Here’s another big secret – If you’re smart enough and ambitious enough, you do not need a college education to become anything your heart desires. Sure, there may be certain exceptions to that. If your dream is to become a doctor, you will most definitely need an education. However, no one should believe that it cannot be possible, no matter how old you are, race or class of people. A child raised in the ghetto cannot expect to be a doctor or a big shot one day, right? Many people believe that he is destined to become nothing more than the way he was raised. That may be true, if the child falls into this erroneous belief system. The smart ones, the ones who have the drive and the motivation to better themselves, are the ones who will do whatever it takes to make it happen. They will not settle nor fail. The examples of this living proof are all around us. How many of you know a person who has become great, without ever having any college, or perhaps studied something completely irrelevant for what they have become? I know many authors who did not go to college for journalism, English or any sort of training whatsoever. It is a God-given talent to write. I also know of a man who worked as a chef for most of his adulthood. He was good at it, but hated cooking for hundreds of people every night. A friend suggested he try sales to get an office job. “But, I’ve never done anything like that. I never went to college,” he objected. Nevertheless, he put out a professional resume. He landed a six-figure job for a sales company who catered to the aviation industry, which is something he always had an interest in. The company actually liked the fact that he had never had any prior sales experience, because that made him “trainable”. He had a fresh mind and a great voice. He became a top performer and was thrilled with his new career. Never let anyone naysay on your desires. Most of all, don’t YOU become a naysayer. You will never know exactly what you are capable of doing if you don’t take that first step of exploration and at least give it a shot. The worst that could happen is that a prospective employer will tell you – “No, we’re not interested.” On the other hand, you could land your dream career. Some employers are impressed more by determination more than credentials. If you have to, you can work your way up by proving your worth and strong desire to achieve. If you feel the need to go to college, then by all means – sign up right away. Don’t waste another minute talking yourself out of it. Don’t worry about money, or time or how you will possibly manage. If you want anything badly enough, and if you believe it most strongly with all of your mind and your heart, then it is most guaranteed to come true for you. Your job is to wait, listen, watch and believe. Let it go and put your wishes out there instead of holding them inside and talking yourself out of it for any reason. Just know with strong faith that it will come. Be happy. Your patience and passionate belief will prove your purpose. You will be see then the huge payoffs of your persistence! Learn to Dream Big and You Will Live the Life of Your Dreams

Let me start with a quote from Jim Rohn, one of the 50 world famous motivational speakers on personal development at Success University: “Formal education will make you a living but self education will make you a fortune.” We all remember the time in high school when it was much more important to win the football game of the season than getting an “A+” in chemistry. To be elected and honored as homecoming queen or king, being a member of the cheerleader team, or find out “who is asking Jenny out on Saturday” – those were the topics of interest. Education in highschool sort of happens without the concious intent of the student. There are several reasons for this but the main one is, that going to school is not the primary choice of the student. He or she has to attend school. In most western countries it is prohibited by law to stay away from school. Sometimes students are taken to their classes even by police force. The common understanding of education is to go to school, get a job and earn a living. Hence, the responsibility for the education and its outcome is placed on the teachers, the parents, the churches, the educational institutions and the environment. And they are doing their best. Self education however is much more powerful and totally relies on the student himself. It is self motivated, self responsible and the outcome is completely self earned. The power of self-education lies in its conscious choice. When we choose to take a course in fly fishing for instance, we will be going fishing sooner or later and try out what we have learned. Learning and taking action, testing out the new abilities to reach and achieve the goals we had in mind, describes the process of a conscious self-education. Why is it then that so many people are clueless about how to live the life of their dreams? The ability to dream decreases with the increasing age. If you listen to children speak about what they want to be later in life, they are so confident and self assured saying: I am going to be a famous lion-tamer. No doubt about it. We laugh about these childish statements because we think we know better. Unfortunately this is not the case. Many people give up their dreams and start to play small. They adjust their dreams to the life that meets them every day. They compromise and lose their passion, their determination in pursuing their goals of life.Slowly, slowly the mind repeats the same old story over and over again. Caught in the limitations of a mediocre life where big dreams are just soap bubbles, life gets boring and suffering takes over. The limited mindset is focused on just earning enough money to keep out of debt and being able to pay the bills. This is definitely not what life is meant to be. And people know it. Somewhere deep down there is this nagging voice speaking to us constantly but we pretend to not hear it. It reminds us of our potential which is much, much greater than we could ever imagine. This sweet little voice tries to remind us to listen to ourselves, to our deepest longings, our wildest dreams. It [the voice] cries out loud, that it wants to live and not be shut down in some mediocre life. It [the inner voice] expresses all the inspiration, the power of creation and the joy of life – a life of fulfillment, joy and happiness. Pursuing your dreams, no matter how big they are, gives you energy, inspires you and maybe for the first time makes you feel authentic. Dare to trust yourself on your dreams and dream as big as you can. Create a dream that inspires you, a dream that takes your breath away and watch the energy flooding in. Once you start listening to yourself you will develop the mindset that you possess everything it takes to live the life of your dreams. It will strengthen your will-power, will give you confidence in making the right decisions and then… only then you are ready to start learning the principles and strategies to reinvent your life. There were people before you and there will be people coming after you but the only thing that matters right now is the choice you make about your life. The Top 3 Success Mindsets That You Do Not Have

If you want to be successful in your life, you must first learn to adopt the success mindset. It is your mindset that will determine what you think. It is what you think that will determine the decision that you are going to make and the action that you are going to take. Therefore, in order to change your life, you must change your action and decision, which leading into changing your mindset. Once you changed your mindset, you will automatically think differently and act differently. As a result, you will be able to produce amazing results just like every successful person did. Here are the top 3 success mindsets that you do not have and which you must adopt if you want to be successful in life… * First, adopt the success mindset that you are responsible for everything that happened in your life. It is only if you think about it this way, you are able to change the situation because you have the power to control. Whenever you blame or give excuses, you are giving away the power to control and to change. If you fail in exam, you can give away the power by giving excuses or blame, but if you do so, you will never change. In order to change your life, you must first take 100% responsibility of it. * Next, adopt the success mindset that everything is possible for you. You have to have the faith and believe that you can do it. It is only when you fully believe in something; you will tap into your maximum potential to make things happen. If you believe that something is not possible for you, you will never do it with your full potential simply because you have told yourself that you are not going to achieve it, so why even try? So believe in yourself that you can do it before you start your journey to success. * Finally, you have to think and act proactively. Successful people are proactive people. They make things happen rather than wait for things to happen. They are the ones who will go out and take action instead of sitting in their room and wait for money to fall into their pocket. And you have to think just like that as well if you want to create amazing results in your life. Always remember that everything is possible and you just have to make the first move. By adopting these 3 success mindsets, you will be able to overcome any obstacles and start to produce great results in your life. Do you want to make your dreams and goals come true in a simple, easier and faster way? Are you really serious to live the kind of lifestyle you desire and do you want to be more successful? The World Needs You to Do What You Love

The greatest change happens because of people that are deeply passionate, and have a great love for the work they do. If you want to make a difference in the world, the single most important thing you can do is consciously and deliberately choose to do work that you are passionate about. No other choice can have a greater impact on the planet, or your life. If you’re doing work that’s boring, you probably won’t make much of an impact. You might provide people with some amount of value. Enough to pay your rent, enough to get by. But you won’t be inciting change. And you certainly won’t be inspiring others. If you’re doing boring work, chances are you do just enough to not get fired. But if you do work that excites you, keeps you up at night, and fulfills you… you’ll do more. You’ll give yourself to it completely. You’ll put in extra time, more energy, more passion. Because it’s worth it. It’s satisfying. At the end of the day you’ll think: “My time was well spent today.” So the real question isn’t whether or not to do boring or passionate work. The question is how to get started. Five things you can do to move toward getting paid to do what you love: While there is more to your journey than just these seven things, this is a huge start. Clarity and commitment are the biggest steps, the rest is easy. One foot in front of the other. You will get there. No one can stop you if you want it enough. And remember, the world needs you to do what you love. Nothing else can create more change, or have a greater impact. Give yourself permission. We need your gifts.

Intentionally Train Your Mind – 5 Steps to Being More Focused and Productive in Everything You Do
September 4, 2009 by Arina

I was introduced to something this week that after only 6 days has had a major impact on my life. It is called “segment intending”. It is a practice described by Abraham-Hicks that involves breaking your day up into segments and then creating a particular intention for that segment. So, whether I was heading off for a hike with my daughter or digging my heels in at work, I set an intention. In both of these cases I set an intention to enjoy each moment, to give thanks for the time I was able to devote to each activity, and to be creative and as productive as possible. It was a quick exercise that took only a few moments but I quickly discovered how powerful this practice could be. I found myself committed to the here and now and armed with a mechanism to draw me back to the present if I got off track, I was able to experience and accomplish more than I ever would have without it. For instance, one morning when I was hiking with my daughter, I found my mind drifting to all of the stuff I thought I should have been doing and worrying that I was being unproductive by taking a long hike in the mountains. But, I quickly brought myself back to the moment and remembered my intention. I focused on my intention and had one of the most enjoyable hikes all week. This positive experience naturally led to a more positive day and ultimately more positive outcomes. Following are 5 ways you can train your mind with intention: 1. Choose a length of time for your segment. If you have never done this before, I would recommend a segment of about 15-20 minutes. As you practice, you can begin increasing your time. Choose your exact start and end time and stick to it. 2. Attempt to plan your segment during a time when you will not be interrupted. This is easier said than done with kids to take care of, bosses coming in and out of your office and the constant noise of life happening all around you; but, do the best you can. A minor interruption may have no impact on your ability to focus and stay in the moment in which case you may decide to continue with your segment. However, if a more pressing interruption finds you, it may be better to end your segment and set an intention for another time later in the day. The important thing to remember when this happens is to reschedule your segment. 3. Determine your goal for that time period. You could do any number of things during this segment. For instance, you could be completing tasks around the house, organizing client files, returning phone calls, writing an article, etc. Just set your intention for that activity and remain focused. 4. When your time for the segment begins, allow yourself to focus solely on that. If at any time you find your mind wandering to something else, redirect it back to your intention. This is probably one of the biggest challenges when you begin this practice. Our minds are programmed to handle multiple things at one time and we have to learn to train our minds to focus. This takes practice. 5. When your time is up, complete your segment. Reflect on what you were able to do during this segment, how it felt, and what, if anything, changed for you. Some people find that this practice allows them to accomplish more in less time. Some people make a practice of doing it multiple times throughout the day. Only you can determine how it will work for you, but the more you do it, the more you will discover your mind becoming much more responsive to what you need and how you feel. It is in many ways of a form of meditation and you will soon find yourself opening up to this power of the mind and accomplishing more than you ever thought possible and more importantly enjoying every glorious minute of it. The Socratic Method – The Key to Unlocking Your Ability to Learn, Create & Problem-Solve
August 8, 2009 by Arina
The Magic of a Question Something almost magical happens when another person asks us a question and then truly listens to our reply. Like the proverbial key to a treasure chest filled with incredible riches, questions somehow unlock our brains. They help us invent new ideas, see an issue from different perspectives, and discover solutions we never knew that we knew! Because such knowledge comes from within us, not from the outside world, it is truly “ours.” By this I mean it quickly becomes part of our conscious knowledge; it is not something that we have to “stuff in” to our brains or cram for in order to learn. This approach to learning and problem-solving has become known as the “Socratic Method.” First mentioned by Plato in the Socratic Dialogues (4th century B.C.E.), the method consists at heart of a conversation between two people: the Questioner/Listener and the Speaker. The Greeks used the Socratic Method to explore philosophical questions revolving around ethics and morals. In modern times, many law schools have adopted it as a way of teaching students to think like a lawyer. Both of these uses can be quite confrontational, however, because they usually involve the defense of one point of view against another. They also assume that the Questioner is an “expert” whose goal is to lead the Speaker to a particular point of view or understanding using a series of carefully chosen questions. Unlocking the Genius Within In contrast to this application, people in the Creativity and Accelerated Learning movements have begun to take a different approach. One man in particular - Win Wenger - has contributed to the field. Author of “The Einstein Factor: A Proven New Method for Increasing Your Intelligence,” Win has developed myriad questioning techniques that emphasize open-ended exploration. In his approach, there is no “right” answer, no final destination. Instead, the Speaker is encouraged to explore, invent, and experience his or her own creative journey. And the only expertise required from the Questioner is the ability to listen well, ask questions, and encourage thoughtful responses. As a result, many people have discovered that when someone asks them questions about an issue that is meaningful to them–and truly listens to their answers–the doors open to their own creative genius deep inside themselves. Whatever We Focus On Grows Part of the reason for this, Win explains, is that describing our perceptions out loud in detail to another person stimulates our ability to perceive in ever greater depth. In other words, whatever we focus on grows. The more aware we are of own perceptions, the greater our ability to create and solve problems. Win believes strongly that: “Genius is already there in nearly everyone if given its chance to express and emerge. It’s there in your own awareness, not in someone else’s second-hand, rote-memorized data.” And the questioning/speaking process inherent in the Socratic Method not only reinforces such perceptions, but also the overall trait of being aware. So if your goal is to develop your creativity or come up with a unique solution to something that challenges you, find someone to talk to: someone who will ask you questions and listen carefully to your answers. Practical Mind Skills – 5 Rules of Super Speed Learning
August 8, 2009 by Arina
Do you know these 5 Rules for Super Speed Learning? Read on and learn how to use the power of your brain to quickly and easily learn anything you choose. The Rule of State: Some states of mind are far more conducive to quality learning that others. Cultivate a state of relaxed alertness, where you’re physically relaxed, mentally relaxed yet alert and comfortably focused on the outcome in hand. Try listening to classical or baroque music, or experiment with binaural beats to dial into the right mind state before hand. The Rule of Intention: Have an outcome defined in advance, before you crack a book or attend a lecture. What specifically do you want from the activity? You don’t need to write this down every time, but you want to have one. Your intention acts as a filter for the relevancy of data you’re consuming and helps you build out the information structures in your mind efficiently. It’s rare that you need to be able to memorise everything. The Rule of Performance: What’s your final goal? What are you going to do with the information? Are you going to perform it, demonstrate it, re-express it in a test? The final performance is often a different skill set altogether from the learning of the information in the first place. Studying for a test is one thing, sitting a test is another so make use of peak performance mind skills and visualise yourself performing perfectly and let your subconscious mind organise your output to that end. The Rule of Input People tend to have preferences for how they learn best. Some prefer reading, others listening. Some can’t understand things well unless they can physically do it. Optimise the info for your preferred method of input. If you understand better through discussion with others, do that more than reading. If you like to listen get recorded lectures and listen to them in double time on your computer. The Rule of Rhythm Memory fades in a predictable pattern. If you review a chunk of information just as it’s starting to fade it reinforces the memory. Multiple quick reviews can then be done to build up your knowledge in layers and encode the data better into your long term memory Review in line with your brains natural memory rhythms is an easy way to memorise things quickly. Aim for a review of your notes on day 1, then days 3, 5, 9, and 14 days to infuse them permanently into your long term memory. Each review can be quite quick and get quicker with each session. Enhance Learning – Get Emotional
August 8, 2009 by Arina

Think of the experiences you have had that you remember the most clearly. Chances are they are the experiences which had the most affect upon your emotions. They are the experiences that ended up shaping who you have become and they are the experiences which will stay with you for the rest of your life. How do you know not to touch fire? Chances are you have before and remember just how much it hurts. Touching the fire is linked to pain so much so that you will always remember to be careful around it lest a disaster occur. When we learn new things, the experiences that entice our emotions tend to be the things we retain the best. The things we learn when we are excited tend to stay with us throughout life. Sadly, this is why a lot of the information we get exposed to at schools is lost so quickly; it means nothing to us. Beating the Monotony Many of the things we learn are so laced with emotional content because life just unfolds in that way. Sometimes, though, we have no choice in the matter; dullness and some experiences go hand in hand. To beat this dullness, there has to be some sort of connection made; we have to be able to see how the current experience connects to prior experiences. We have to be able to use some imagination in thinking about the subject matter. Discovering our connectedness to the subject matter will help us become emotionally involved in the content. The information comes to life and suddenly our curiosity is piqued. Achieving this is not easy. Some classes seem so far away from everyday life that no one could get excited about them, but life does not always hand us the key for growth. Sometimes we have to use a little imagination and a little resolve to learn more about our world. There are many possible ways a person can live their life. Different people pursue different careers, hobbies, possessions and personalities. But while we all strive to achieve our own different place in the sun, we are all also interested in whether or not the life we choose is a life worth living. There are many facets of a good life: A strong sense of self, wholesome relationships, and a virtuous character. My goal is to explore these different areas, decide whether or not they are worthy endeavors, and try to make them practical if not for my own personal life, then for you the reader.
